Time Travel and Time Machines
This paper is an enquiry into the logical, metaphysical, and physical possibility of time travel understood in the sense of the existence of closed worldlines that can be traced out by physical objects. We argue that none of the purported paradoxes rule out time travel either on grounds of logic or metaphysics. More relevantly, modern spacetime theories such as general relativity seem to permit...
متن کاملThree-Step and Four-Step Random Walk Integrals
We investigate the moments of 3-step and 4-step uniform random walk in the plane. In particular, we further analyse a formula conjectured in [BNSW09] expressing 4-step moments in terms of 3-step moments. Diverse related results including hypergeometric and elliptic closed forms for W4(±1) are given and two new conjectures are recorded.
متن کاملDiscrete Random Variables over Domains
In this paper we initiate the study of discrete random variables over domains. Our work is inspired by work of Daniele Varacca, who devised indexed valuations as models of probabilistic computation within domain theory. Our approach relies on new results about commutative monoids defined on domains that also allow actions of the non-negative reals. Using our approach, we define two such familie...
متن کاملWorldlines and body points associated with an extensive property
Material structure of bodies that is usually assumed a-priory in continuum mechanics is constructed on the basis of a balance of a given extensive property on spacetime. Body points are identified with worldlines—the integral lines of the flux of the property. The geometric setting assumes that spacetime has only the structure of a differentiable manifold and no particular frame is assumed to b...
متن کاملOn the Landau Ginzburg theory of MAG projected SU ( 2 ) lattice gauge theory
Maximal Abelian gauge fixing and subsequent Abelian projection of SU(2) lattice gauge theory defines closed trajectories of magnetic monopoles. These trajectories can be interpreted in terms of an effective scalar field theory of the MAG monopoles using the worldline representation of the functional determinants. Employing the monopole worldlines detected in the numerical simulation, we show th...
